Damp investigation and treatment

In the entry between our house and next door there is what seems to be damp patches on the brick flooring and we do not know where it has come from.
We are currently doing renovations on our house and have removed all the plaster on the stairs and landing and have put up dustguard doors to reduce the spread of the dust. With these being closed constantly we have noticed a damp/musty smell coming from the bottom of the stairs as well (the stair wall is also the wall in the entry) so would like it to be looked at and spoken about what we can do to rectify it.
We live in a mid terraced property which is over 100 years old.
